Co. Wicklow welcomed another Ottawa Irish family last weekend when Sue Merkley, her mother Bernie Hendrick and Sue’s hubby Doug visited the Hendrick homestead on what was once the Fitzwilliam Estate. Sue was kind enough to do an interview for CBC Québec recently when she talked of her Irish roots and the Canada Come Home event. You can listen to that interview here. http://www.cbc.ca/breakaway/2013/03/26/the-gathering/index.html
Sue, Doug and Bernie were given a private tour around the Arklow Maritime Museum by local author Jim Rees and then toured Coollattin House with volunteer guide Jerry Cassidy. Local historian Kevin Lee was also on hand to help Sue with the search for the Hendrick homestead.
“We’ve had a wonderful time and would certainly not have gotten to see and feel the taste of the local’s without your immense help. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
We met with Jerry for the tour – which was unbelievable and so informative. Then we all met up with Kevin and he is such a wealth of information. He has been most gracious and emailed me some of the documentation he has about our relatives.
Thank you again for your help and information.” Sue Merkley
